Stay Afloat  -  Blog

One of my favorite things about Feng Shui is the revelation that happens by understanding the connection between our physical world and our inner world.  The ability to harness this connection for our own intentions definitely gives us a power over our lives.

As our lives continue to change, we can adapt our spaces to support us.

Christmas is a time of merriment, a time of joy.  Spending time with loved ones, twinkling lights, and snuggling by the fire are just a few of the activities that make this such a magical time of year!

Make this Christmas season stress free with a few simple Feng Shui tips.

1. The Christmas Tree.  Where should the Christmas Tree be placed?

Elementally, the Christmas Tree represents the wood element.  Wood is generally associated with growth and abundance - which is always welcome this time of year.  If you want to place your tree in the Wood corner of your room, this would be the back left corner from the entrance to the room.  Remember, Wood feeds fire.  So the tree to the left of your fireplace would also feel very balanced.

Sometimes this doesn't work out, either because of furniture placement limitations, or the overall architecture of the room itself.  The function of the room must always be considered first.

Sometimes it can be frustrating when the placement of the tree causes other items in the room to be shifted or moved.  Think of it this way, you are stirring up the stagnant chi in the room, which will re-energize the space.  Also, no matter how much we love a space, a shift often offers a new perspective, which is beneficial.

Lastly, it's your space.  Trust youself - if it feels right to you, that's good enough!

2.  How much is too much Christmas decor?

This truly comes down to the individual.  There are those of us who truly enjoy the Griswold Christmas experience, and those of us that prefer a simple yet elegant approach.  Find your own style and preference.  Don't do what you think is expected of you, but what you enjoy.  It's your home, make it a reflection of you.

3.  What about those sentimentals?

We all have items that have been handed down to us, or gifted to us.  Ask yourself, does this item bring you happiness when you see it?  Or sadness?  Or guilt?  Whatever the emotion you have should be your guide. If you smile, and have happy memories, then use it.  If it does not fill you with joy, you are under no obligation to use it.  If you are not ready to get rid of it, store it for a future when you are ready to view it.  Or simply, give it to someone else.

4.  Do you need to display every Christmas item you have?

No.  By selecting which items fit you this year, you are matching your environment to yourself.  You are not the same person you were last year, and you are not the same person you will be next year.  We continue to change and grow, and that is healthy.

Enjoy this special time of year, and stay true to yourself.  Enjoy your family and your friends, and spread your joy with others!
